INTERVISTA A BITSIE TULLOCH

‘Interview on TNWU’

Do you think getting pregnant with Nick’s baby helped Juliette go the way she went?

However, he was already heading in a dark direction. But no, I think Juliette finally said ‘It should have been my baby’. Also, it raises a lot of moral questions which is that Nick didn’t know she was sleeping with Adalind when she got pregnant. He was thinking of sleeping with Juliette.

So, this is a question I’ve actually seen a lot of fans raise on Twitter and Facebook. Like, do you have to take care of this baby? Did not know. But I think you know that the new character, Eve, doesn’t have an emotional attachment to the baby or Adalind. But Juliette at that moment, did she plummet further down? Yes. I’m sure of it.

But she was still on that trajectory.

Your character started out sweet and nice, and now you are dark. How do you like how your character is developing, changing and becoming more powerful?

Well, I mean, if you really monitor season 1 through season 5, I feel really lucky because how often do you get to play multiple characters on the same TV show.

And this is that in a way I see that this Eva is obviously really the third for me because she was there as the good, sweet Juliette. Then there was Juliette, the darkest and most evil. And now there has been a kind of rebirth. And we have a completely new character. So it has always existed. And I was definitely grateful to the writers because you know I can – I can – you know there’s something to be said for getting to know a character so well.

But it’s also fun to play and experiment. So, I was really excited about the cursed beast storyline just because Juliette had been so consistently good, caring, and helpful for so long.

That I thought that if anyone was going to transform and be so bad and so evil and so powerful, it should be her. So, it was really exciting for me. And then I’ll definitely admit that I had a little bit of mixed feelings when they – the producers called me in March and then said, ‘This is our idea for Season 5’ because it was hard to say goodbye to Juliette.

You know, at that point, I’d been playing it in various iterations, good or bad, for four years. So I knew I was going to miss her. And I knew it was going to be hard to say goodbye. But I’m having a lot of fun with this new Eve character. It’s really funny. I have to do a lot of research, you know. They were saying you have to watch the Lupus on Nikita for inspiration.

And then, like you now, I was shooting the fifth season, obviously in private because no one was allowed to talk about it. And my name was even changed on the cast and everything in the queue so that no actor in the background would know it was me. They were great on – on – you know there were a lot of levels to keep the secret.

But some directors were coming into season five and they would say, ‘Oh my God, you have to watch this.’ David Strathairn came in and said, ‘You have to watch Hanna’ with Kate Blanchett and Eric Bana. And watch her performance. ‘I won’t even try to say his name. She is such an amazing actress.

She is currently in Brooklyn and has been nominated for an Academy Award. You’ll know who I’m talking about.

But … so I was watching it. And then I also drew inspiration from Alicia Vikander’s performance in Ex Machina. So it was – it was really fun, the new character.

The new you, yes. So was there any physical or mental challenge to get into this character?

Surely because for me personally, as I said, it was hard to sort out – it was hard to let Juliette go because everyone else is still playing the same character. So I’m working with actors that you know I’m used to being in this world with them and relating to them this other character in a certain way. And I had to put all that aside.

Physically, there was a huge amount of not only did I spend a lot – I was actually only out for four episodes. But I started training a lot more heavily than before just to be very strong and eat a lot of protein. But to really sell that this is a new character, I had to do something physical. It couldn’t be alone: you know the dialogue is different or she is dressed differently or wearing wigs.

All this is true …

But I had to – you know why certain performances like Ex Machina’s, I was like, ‘Okay, I’ll take – I’ll steal some – those robotic moves of hers’ because this – Eve’s new character is basically I don’t want to. say he was brainwashed because he was not brainwashed.

But it was almost broken. Hadrian’s Wall knew how powerful she was and kidnapped her. You know trouble – you shot her with what we now know are tranquilizer darts and they basically ripped her apart and turned her into a fighting machine. So, keeping that in mind, this is something the new character likes to move forward.

And then psychologically to really make her feel like I’m a new person and Juliette is dead and ‘I’m not Juliette’. You’re talking about someone, not me, it was really about having a complete disconnect from his old life and not leaving even a glimmer of emotion or anything like that, whatever from his old life triggered it in his future.

Does Eve have any residual feelings from her past life? Will we find that she still cares about Nick? Will there really be something?

Right now, his main focus is getting the job done. And you know there’s an episode coming up where she has a little heart to heart with Nick. I believe it’s in the previews, so I don’t think I’m going to go away anything. But he’s saying this was the only reason he had to live. Because he was so powerful and so out of control and deep down he didn’t know how to reign the most exuberant powers in this.

And Hadrian’s Wall gave her an outlet and taught her how to do it. But she is – she’s so scared that you even know how to ramble even a little or devolve back into the evil Juliette, that is – she couldn’t be more focused on being controlled and getting that job done. And of course, Hadrian’s Wall is a powerful and positive group that formed basically in response to the battle of Black Claw, which is like the great, huge uprising that is starting to happen.

But did I answer your question? Not sure if I did it?

I can understand that as an actress you know the excitement of playing Juliette as the evil Juliette. I can understand the challenge and excitement of playing Eve. But what do you think about the reaction from fans over the past year or so, when people have gone from cheering for the character to cheering against your character?

Where there were people you know trying to get Nick to end up with someone else. I mean, it really was, you know it was evil. And not as some kind of evil cold. But in the end it was pretty bad.

To be honest with you, in a way, the character was a bit polarizing too. So, with the exception of season 2 and season 3 when it was – which is to be expected because you know people – people are fans of the show. And they want Nick and the protagonist to win. And the first season, I’m a necessity because it had to be kept in the dark, Juliette was a bit of a passive character.

And I think some people are bothered by this. And then the second and third season, everyone loved it. It was Scooby’s gang and it was heavenly and everyone was involved in helping. But, going forward to keep a show alive and to keep fans busy, you really have to shake things up and most likely piss people off.

And I just realized that moving forward there was almost a need for a bigger antagonist than there had been before. And what better antagonist do you have than women who are the love of his life that he trusts you implicitly know to be the one who is now basically out for the blood involved in his mother’s death and whatnot.

So I certainly didn’t expect anyone to be happy with it. And they weren’t. And you know in a way – you know I was really happy to see who people really were, you know in the four episodes that I wasn’t there that people really missed Juliette. And they were like, ‘Yeah. I was so angry. But I miss her. And it doesn’t look the same without her. ‘

And again, as if Juliette isn’t coming back soon. You know, I think it also remains to be seen to answer more to the previous question whether or not he starts developing feelings for Nick. It’s the TV. She has loved him for a long time. Right now, as I said, she is more focused on work. But I’ve seen nothing but almost incredibly positive and enthusiastic fan reactions to the fact that I’m still a part of the show and excited to see what the new character is like.

So I know it was a shame for everyone that we had such a long break between the fall finale and the comeback this Friday. But I think it will be worth it. And yes, he is just a funny character and seeing how over the next 5-6 episodes, he will gradually meet his old friends.

And everyone responds differently to this new Eva character.

After discovering Juliette’s fate, did you know you would be back so soon?

Yes. In fact, it should have been even shorter. Initially, I knew there was to be this dream sequence with – in the first episode when Nick was dreaming of the funeral. But then he realized it’s a dream. So it’s like these big questions. Where is the body? Where is the body? And I know one of the producers wanted me back in episode 3.

But I think it was ultimately decided and – that if they were really going to sell it and really have fun with it, really convince the fans that Juliette – you know Juliette was off the show and I wasn’t coming back. They wanted to extend it a little longer. Not too long. So I went back in 6 and shot some scenes for episode 1.

So it was basically 2 to 5 that I was out. But it really was – it should never have been longer than episode 6. If nothing else, it would have been shorter. It was like, I’ll say too, it seemed a lot longer for me because – and I think for the cast because we all had a hard time not talking about it.

I was … it was decided that I wasn’t going to Comic Con this year, which bothered me because I love Comic Con. I love the panel. I love seeing all the fans. But even how, it would have been too obvious, I think I could get back on the show if I went to Comic Con. So that was the situation where it’s like I have to get one for the team and stay in Portland.

But yeah, I really don’t talk about it. And there were – there were a lot of fun and clever things we had to do, including me shooting almost exclusively on stage so I could be hiding in case someone was taking pictures of me while filming Portland. So it was a lot of stage work.

I was wondering if you could talk a little more about those difficulties of keeping Eve’s secret. I mean, you’re pretty active on Twitter and interact with fans and stuff. So what were some of the challenges in keeping it hidden from fans?

Well, I mean my biggest challenge – you know, I mean honestly, that was me – the Season 4 finale was in May. So it’s been almost – almost 7 months too – you and I – of probably any cast member, I’m the most active on social media. I love interacting with fans on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

So – it seemed to me that what I would say very clearly is that Juliette is dead because she actually is. But I never said, ‘I’m not going back to Grimm’ because I didn’t want to outright lie. I would say: ‘I know. It’s a real shame, but yeah, Juliette – you know Juliette won’t come back knowing what was going on.

I also like to always tweet behind the scenes photos while on the set of interesting things that are going on. So it’s been about 7 months since I posted a picture, I’d say I was visiting someone on set. Like ‘Oh, visiting David’. And one of the things that in a way has saved us in great respect is the fact that I also hang out with David Giuntoli in real life. So a lot of people thought that when they saw me hanging out in Portland or knowing I was still in Portland, they thought I was still there because I was dating David, not because I was shooting.

As I said before, in screenplays, generally Juliette – Bitsie Tulloch is said in third position. And when this new character was born, we basically had to come up with a pseudonym that was my legal name and middle name, which is Elizabeth Andrea. And then they did – they pushed me to position 10 or someone so no one would have guessed it was me in case someone took over the script.

Or you know someone recycled the script and someone saw it. And also so that the background actors or guest stars didn’t know I was still on the show. They were really in awe about it. My plaster chair was taken away with my name on it. My … I have a sign on the door of the trailer that says to close the door behind you because Henry, my dog, always goes to work with me and I don’t want him to go down.

It was like love Bitsie and Henry. And this was overshadowed. I mean, there was no sign of my name anywhere. So everyone was really taking it seriously. I know the crew sat down at the start of the season saying it’s serious. We don’t want the secret to come out. We must know. There was a lot of confusion with the early directors.

Aaron Lipstadt in particular because he called me Elizabeth, Juliette, Eve, Bitsie. How it would basically go through a variety of names before being like, ‘I don’t know. Come here. ‘So yeah, it was … it was tough. The hardest thing for me was definitely not interacting so much with the fans.

Now, as you said, you basically played three different characters on the show. So do you have a favorite quality of each of them?

This is a very good question. I would say that Eve is so laser focused and nothing can somehow take her out of her mission, which for you is to basically eliminate Black Claw. That’s what it is – that’s why in his head, that’s how it’s the only reason I’m alive right now and why I’m not wreaking havoc and destruction on the people I love.

I … I will concentrate everything. So she is incredibly focused. It’s probably a bit harder to pick a quality I really loved about the bad Juliette, other than I think I respect how almost obsessive and open she was about it. And only towards the end, when you see this evolution, because in the beginning it was really fighting it.

He didn’t want it. And then towards the end it’s like, ‘Well, I can’t control it. So I might as well hug him. ‘And it was almost like waving your weird flag. And that was what it was. And she was like, ‘This is who I am now. I tried my best to get rid of it. I do not know how. Done. This is who I am. And I will embrace the new me. ‘

And then with Juliette, I – I’d say she was – always really liked her because she was so – so well-meaning and so caring and really so in love with Nick. And you know she had made a lot of sacrifices for him. Obviously there are many sacrifices in choosing to be with him and live with him and you know basically that you are a constant danger.

Did you mention earlier how Eve was destroyed and how she wasn’t brainwashed but was more destroyed? I know they show some of it in this week’s episode. But how long will they take? How what happened to Juliette to take her to Eve?

They don’t – yeah, they don’t really get into it that much. You will see snippets of how she trained. There’s a really good scene – I mean it’s like episode 8 or 9, there’s a great scene. Just like, he’s so physically powerful. But he doesn’t train like normal people either. So you will see some of this. But they don’t go too far.

And I do not know. It could be a plan down the road where they’ll do flashbacks. But a lot is really more eluded and as you know discussed, but not in-depth to say.

You talked earlier about how you’ve worked with this cast for so long. And it’s hard to somehow let go of those relationships. How difficult is it to stay in that robotic state, not react differently from how you would have as Juliette in certain scenes?

This is a good question. I haven’t – I’ve practically interacted and I’m not going to say who. I interacted or Eve interacted with almost everyone. And everyone has had different reactions towards him. It’s – I honestly guess the answer is when I’m in character, it’s not that hard because like I said before, she’s so focused. And it almost feels like you know with Nick, there’s just a – maybe just the slightest tug.

But she won’t even go there. She won’t even let her mind go there or her heart because she – you know she’s like, ‘I’m a new person. Juliette is dead. And I’m just here to get this job done. End of the story.’ So, as an actor, it’s always … you know it’s really funny. You know we’re always kidding.

And the cast is very close, so it’s always kind of funny when we go by like sitting in the green room and everyone gets busy all of a sudden, I’m kind of a joke, ‘Nobody talks to me. I need to be focused. ‘And I … you know, I’m going to back off a bit before starting a scene so that I … you know and I remember:’ I’m not in this gang anymore. I am a new person. ‘

And I just need you to know how to get the job done.

You were earlier talking about the clever tricks you did to not let it be revealed that you were still on set, including not coming to Comic Con. What I found interesting is that your bio was actually removed from the NBC press website that sold it for me.

And I –

Yup.

You lobbied in November for the 100th episode celebration. So how hard was it to keep it a secret from everyone you were there that you interviewed with?

In November, with only a couple of weeks left until my episode returned, I was realizing that I don’t want to lose my lips. But sometimes I was – you know the best I’d say you know that hinting at a possible comeback is a couple of times in interviews, I said, ‘You know what? It’s science fiction. Everything could not happen. ‘

So, at that point, I was almost answering such questions. But since … honestly, by November, because I had to answer questions and do interviews about the show since May with giving away something, by November, it wasn’t really hard. I felt like I was doing another interview about the show.

And he was really focused on how grateful I was to be a member of the case for 4 years as Juliette. So again, it was little things that I was saying without really revealing anything or without lying. Obviously I’ve been thrilled to play Juliette for four years. And I was there to support all of my fellow cast members.

The only thing that hasn’t been revealed is that I’m also a current and remained a cast member the entire time.

How did the producers tell you in March that your character was dying but not dying? To die and rise again?

There is a funny story because I, in particular, am close to a lot of crew members. And at various points over the next four years, I’d like to call the producers and say, ‘Well, where do we go with this storyline?’ And they say, ‘How do you know?’ And I was like, ‘Well, I’m not saying who, but someone told me.’

So I had like – I had some crew members who would just like to tell me because they will see an outline for an episode before the cast sees the script. So what happened is that the producers released the draft to the crew and you know the production crew in Portland that afternoon. The conversation ended in March.

They are releasing a draft and they had to call me because they knew the moment the crew got hold of that draft they were about to tell me, calling me and being like Juliette dies. Do you really die? Are you out of the show? And they didn’t want me to think at any point that I was actually dead.

So they called me and said, ‘Just so you know, we know your friends with everyone. And then they will probably tell you that you will be called. But today we publish a pattern in which Juliette dies. But don’t worry, you know you’re not off the show. Our idea is that you’ll be reborn as … and transform into a Nikita-like character.

So this is – here’s what – how that conversation turned out. And then everything went well. And I was just curious to read about the new character and what she would be like.
